Q&A of 2019 Semmelweis University Seminar@Shanghai, China

The annual entrance examination for four national medical universities in Hungary and 2019 Semmelweis University Seminar in China has just come to an end. At the final Q&A session of Semmelweis University Seminar,  students and parents gave the positive questions that they are most interested, and they all got answers from Dr. Gorgely Agoc who is the professor of Semmelweis University and the examination invigilator. Therefore, for those who didn’t present at the seminar but interested in applying in the future to Semmelweis Univeristy or plan to study any medical schools in Hungary, below are the answers of the most popular questions on site.

Q:Questions from students or parents

A:Answers from Dr. Agocs

Q&A of 2019 Semmelweis University Seminar@Shanghai, China

Q The medical college graduation examination of Semmelweis University you have mentioned is the same as medical license examination. If students take courses in English, which language will the final exam use?

It depends on the teaching languages, as you know there are English, German and Hungarian programs. If the student choose to study the English program, the graduation examination is in English. Accordingly, German program is German and the Hungarian program is Hungarian.

Q  If we meet some local patients during the internship, is it necessary learn Hungarian?

A Our university provides courses in Hungarian at the first 2 years, which are specially designed for international students to prepare for their internship after junior year. And communicating with patients just need to understand simple Hungarian. Of course, if students are unwilling to learn Hungarian or can’t speak Hungarian well, teachers will assist them. However, in order to have a better career development in the future, improving Hungarian is very beneficial to personal academic performance and future employment.

If my child is studying IB, what are the grades requirement?

To international students, our university has no specific grades requirement system for IB and A-level, unlike the medicine schools in the UK and the United States, and the decision of admission depends on mainly the result of entrance examination. (Note: University of Szeged and University of Pécs have a exemption policy for students with excellent IB or A-level, but they need to submit complete application materials to be confirmed by the university). The annual entrance examination subjects are biology, chemistry and English. But what I want to emphasize is that even if there is no physics at the entrance exam, physics courses will be included in the first year. These three subjects require students with good foundation before admission. The ordinary high school in China has physics courses. If students of IB have no physics foundation at all, they can seek private physics teachers to make up the courses. The university official website also has physical academic materials for self-study. It’s recommended that students who are preparing the exam or have passed the exam can check out the website.

Some foreign medical colleges require that students have to drop out or transfer major if they fail one or more subjects. Does Semmelweis University give students chance to resit the examination during the study?

At our university, you have 4-6 opportunities to retake the exam for each subject within limited time. Due to teachers having their own schedule, this means that you have to make appointments in advance. If you have other exams at the same time, which means that you can’t resit examination at this time. In fact, the actual number of resit you may use are fewer than 6 times, but it is already more than enough. However, some subjects, such as anatomy, if you fail once, you can resit. After passing it, you could successfully study in the sophomore. If you study hard from the first year and manage your time well, then you don’t need to consider to resit any exam at all. However, if some students have special family problems, the university will give them opportunities to resit according to specific situation. Actually, our university has high requirements on students. The purpose that we admit students is to let you graduate successfully rather than to brush you off in the first or second year after the admission. Therefore, passing the entrance exam is very necessary and it is an important criterion.

There are 4-6 chances for resit the exam according to you said, but in case they are all failed eventually, does university require us to repeat the courses or can carry it to pass at the next year?

A It depends on the courses you take. Some courses in the second year must be based on the first years study, which can only repeat the grade for one year. While some courses have no related courses in the second year and then this kind of course can be taken in the second year to retake without affecting the subsequent study.

How about the enrollment rate and graduate rate?

As a student, as long as you study hard and keep up with the teachers, then you can graduate successfully. As we mentioned above, the university allows you to retake the tests and you have multiple chances to makeup. However, I need to emphasize the  students, although some students have passed the entrance examination, they have to work harder to graduate after entering the freshmen. And English level is also important. As medical students, you have no time to study English once you entered the medical colleges, so you English needs to be in a good level before the freshmen. In addition, I once again emphasize the time management skills, because it is greatly related to the passing rate.

Q Hungarian medical universities have no requirements on IELTS or TOEFL, but what English level is required to meet the admission?

If you are admitted, which means that you English level meets the requirements. And the university believes that this level can ensure your graduation successfully because all the courses taught in English. It’s difficult to study medical major in native language. While you learn it in second language, it’s conceivable that how important your English is.

Freshman and sophomore are the hardest two year of the whole college life and a crucial stage to make progresses. To medical students, this is also the crucial period for the development of time management skills and priority management skills. The university is responsible for offering academic guidance and help, but ultimately the learning depends on every student’s individual momentum. Differing from high school, teachers in University won’t supervise students’learning process, personal life and attendance. From our views, this doesn’t belong to the university’s  responsibilities. Therefore, for students who enter the medical colleges just graduate from high school in 18 or 19 years old, you must accomplish this transformation process as soon aspossible.

Q Does the university provide dormitory?

Sorry, we don’t offer student dormitory by ourselves, but we have cooperation with some independent institutions and there are some student apartments for rent around the school. Students can choose accommodation recommended by the school or rent their own houses. Also, some students buy property in Budapest, which is relatively a good investment at present, because the rents in the capital have raised too much in recent years. For example, the rent for a 6-year’s medicine student could buy a small apartment in Budapest.

After the completion of senior two high school, if admitted to Debrecen’univerity BMCE to study pre-med, which is Debrecen’s pre-med. After finishing the courses, I want to apply the dentistry of Semmelweis University or University of Debrecen, compared with McDaniel College, what are the disadvantages?

I think Debrecen’s pre-med is designed for its own to progress to enter their medical schools. While Mcdaniel College is aimed at Semmelweis University, University of Pécs, University of Szeged and other medicine universities in general. Each university has its own emphasis.

Can we just check out the university’s curriculum provision before the enrollment?

Of course, you can download it from the official website, or you can contact OsenMedicine, the China Office of Semmelweis University, who will email to parents and students that are interested. The website includes the courses of each year and the number of credits. Unlike clinical medicine, dentistry is a subject with strong operation ability. There are a number of internships from the beginning. The university has specialized large dental laboratory for students to operate on the dentures, accompanying by lectures. After the third year, students can go to hospitals to do internships with doctors. AT other countries, dental graduates must have internships for some time and then obtain physician license to practice medicine independently. This stage in Hungary is very short and generally you can practice medicine at once after graduation. As shown on the presentation, the first Chinese mainland student at Semmelweis University(2014), who had worked as a doctor after graduation at once. He is a doctor from that time since.

Q&A of 2019 Semmelweis University Seminar@Shanghai, China

Is the dental medical license exam the same as the graduation exam? what about medicine?

A As we mentioned before, graduation examination is the same as medical license examination in Hungary, this policy applies to medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. If you would like to practice medicine in non-EUcountries such as the United States, you need to take American medical license examination. After passing the examination, you can practice medicine in the United States. The rate of medical students at Semmelweis University passing this exam is relatively high.

After graduating from DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine), I get Hungarian license, then do I need to change the license or re-take the examination within the EU  (if I want to go to practice at other EU countries?) What about in the UK?

A If you go to different countries in the EU, you have to take additional exam. But it has little relation with academic exam. If you want to practice medicine in the third country, you must speak their local language. For instance, if you go to Germany, you must speak German well. So this exam is based on language and local laws rather than medical examination. The degree and medical license you have obtained are recognized by the whole EU, the UK is included as well.

You have mentioned that students have the opportunity to exchange internships in other countries of the EU, is this compulsory or optional?

That’s not compulsive. But I suggest that if you have the opportunity to exchange internships in other European countries, you must seize the opportunity and apply exchange programs among European countries if possible. This is beneficial to your performance and employment development for the future.

Q&A of 2019 Semmelweis University Seminar@Shanghai, China

Q You have mentioned in the PPT about the German campus of Semmelweis University. The students who choose majors taught in German could have internships in German hospitals. If I choose major taught in English, can I have the chance to have internship in other countries?

Our university doesn’t offer internships in other countries hosipitals, except for affiliated hospital of Semmelweis University. But students can contact hospitals in the third country or their own country to do internships. The opportunities for internship in German are offered by affiliated hospital of German campus of Semmelweis University. This is essentially the same as the affiliated hospital provided by the main campus of Semmelweis University in Budapest. The university allows students to do internships in other countries. But for medical major taught in English, the clinical internships offered by the university itself are in Budapest.

If I apply for the pre-med, whether I have to graduate from high school before I study pre-med or after senior two?

Only senior 3 students can apply the pre-med.

Q&A of 2019 Semmelweis University Seminar@Shanghai, China

Could you give us an introduction to the entrance examination of this morning? Is the admission for entrance examination based on written or oral examination results?

A The examination for all five medical universities in Hungary composed of written examination and oral examination. The entrance examination for our school and other universities in medical university association is held in China once a year and is organized by Osen Medicine, the China Office of Hungarian National Examination Association. The examination is generally held in March to May of each year and it is completed in one day. After the examination, the grades will be assessed by members of examination committee of each university. We may focus on the oral examination, and it is also main examation format after enrolled to the university. During the entrance examination, as it varies from person to person, some students’ written examination is not good enough but oral examination is quite excellent. We will also consider enrolling these students.

Q&A of 2019 Semmelweis University Seminar@Shanghai, China

Q During the process of becoming a specialist dentist, is it necessary to pursuing PhD?

A Three years after obtaining a degree of dentistry (5years) are for internship in hospital such as orthodontics, periodontics, etc, depending on your specific choices. PhD is specialized in professional researches and differs from clinic. A specialist doesn’t have to pursue PhD, but if you want to make achievements in some specific field and then PhD is necessary. If you plan to purse PhD, the university will provide related research programs for you at the degree level. Although this has no credits and requires students’ extra time and energy to study, it is highly recommended for students because there will be extra bonus for later PhD application.

  Q&A of 2019 Semmelweis University Seminar@Shanghai, China

If I want to be specialist dentist, such as orthodontics and prosthodontics, as you have mentioned that I think all these can be conducted independently after 5 years. But if I don’t want to be a dentist, then I don’t need further study. What’s the difference?

Theoretically, after graduation, general dentists have no need to specialist training for three years. But I think no students of the Dentistry from Semmelweis University who does not to choose to be a specialist doctor after 5 years’ study. If you plan to be a specialist, you must study further. Most of students in Semmelweis University will choose to be a specialist after graduating from dentistry. In the practical operation during the internship, you are the real doctor and every dentist has their own orientations. Of course, this study is completely conducted in the hospital rather than go back to your university. And hospitals will have periodical exams to help the students finish their specialist training.

Q&A of 2019 Semmelweis University Seminar@Shanghai, China

Q Could you tell us something about career development after graduation?

You can go anywhere you want without limitation. The medical degree of Semmelweis University is recognized by majority of mainstream countries around the world. The international students who choose courses taught in English stay at their own country or go to the third country. Most of students will leave Hungary to the third country after graduation or start practicing medicine.

Q The degree we achieve is bachelor or master after graduation?

A Like many western countries, we take the integrated degree system, which means that pursuing one degree is enough for you to be a doctor. It’s said that this degree certified by China Ministry of Education is equal to master of medicine if you come back to China. If you choose to be specialist doctor, you need to take specialist training and study in the hospital. If you would like to do researches, stay in the university or have further research in your own specialized field, then you can pursue PhD. But  PhD not a required option for being a doctor just as previous said.

Q After graduating from 5-year dentistry, can I do an internship in a medical institution?  How about opening the clinic in the EU? For example, after gradation for five years, and I get the dental license, can I open the clinic for orthodontics? Or being a doctor?

A The medical system varies from place to place. You need to pay attention to the system for opening a clinic. In some countries, such as Hungary, people can open the clinic without any medical background and they just employ the dentists. For instance, you can open the clinic in Hungary without any medical background, but the employees you hire must have dental backgrounds.

If you want to be a dentist, you must reach the level of being a doctor in other hospitals, even in your own clinic. However, if you don’t have specialist training after graduation, you cannot be engaged in orthodontics, which is consistent with the requirements of other hospitals.

You should realize that opening a hospital such as dental clinic or medical clinics belongs to the category of corporate activities. Even if Hungary has no requirement that the owner with medical background for running clinics, but except for opening pharmacy, where pharmacists must hold at least 50% of the share according to the law.

Q&A of 2019 Semmelweis University Seminar@Shanghai, China

What if there are study difficulties ,  is the student able to change major or transfer to other schools?

A Yes. students can  transfer majors or to other medical schools in Hungary. And these schools can exempt some credits, which is based on his previous credits. Of course, transferring major is another choice. Semmelweis University provides many opportunities for students to repeat the exam. But if you failed in so many re-sits, it’s necessary to think it over whether you’re suitable for studying medicine.

Q Is there a number requirement on enrollment from each country? Or is there any quota on Chinese students?

No quota restriction. As the chart mentioned, the number of Chinese students applying for our university or being admitted is relatively low, only 14 so far, although it already is a big improvement than that in 2014 (only one student and recruited by Osen Medicine). Compared to other countries, such as Japan and Korea (about 150 students participate in the entrance exam of our university each year), so we don’t have limitations on Chinese students. I hope the Chinese student number can catch up. We hope that our university is of diversity and students are from various countries with an average number. However, we will not lower the threshold for Chinese students because of less of application. We hope that students can conform to our requirements and more and more excellent Chinese students will apply and successful  enroll to our university.

Q&A of 2019 Semmelweis University Seminar@Shanghai, China

Is the MD( Dotor of Medicine ) obtained in Hungary the same as that of the United States?

Yes, MD is the same. But be aware, there is another degree, MD/PhD, in the United States, which is a research-oriented medical degree. These two are different.

Are the courses taught in English the same as that in German?

I’m not quite sure about it, but majority of courses have no difference. You can check out the information about curriculum provision on the official websites of university. The entrance requirements for medical majors taught in German have mentioned in the PPT, and German language level for these majors, including clinical medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, etc. is A1. The admission will depend on applicant’s high school grades and personal quality assessment. Differing from majors taught in English, German taught program has no entrance examination requirements.
