Q The medical college graduation examination of Semmelweis University you have mentioned is the same as medical license examination. If students take courses in English, which language will the final exam use?
A It depends on the teaching languages, as you know there are English, German and Hungarian programs. If the student choose to study the English program, the graduation examination is in English. Accordingly, German program is German and the Hungarian program is Hungarian.
Q If we meet some local patients during the internship, is it necessary learn Hungarian?
A Our university provides courses in Hungarian at the first 2 years, which are specially designed for international students to prepare for their internship after junior year. And communicating with patients just need to understand simple Hungarian. Of course, if students are unwilling to learn Hungarian or can’t speak Hungarian well, teachers will assist them. However, in order to have a better career development in the future, improving Hungarian is very beneficial to personal academic performance and future employment.
Q If my child is studying IB, what are the grades requirement?
A To international students, our university has no specific grades requirement system for IB and A-level, unlike the medicine schools in the UK and the United States, and the decision of admission depends on mainly the result of entrance examination. (Note: University of Szeged and University of Pécs have a exemption policy for students with excellent IB or A-level, but they need to submit complete application materials to be confirmed by the university). The annual entrance examination subjects are biology, chemistry and English. But what I want to emphasize is that even if there is no physics at the entrance exam, physics courses will be included in the first year. These three subjects require students with good foundation before admission. The ordinary high school in China has physics courses. If students of IB have no physics foundation at all, they can seek private physics teachers to make up the courses. The university official website also has physical academic materials for self-study. It’s recommended that students who are preparing the exam or have passed the exam can check out the website.
Q Some foreign medical colleges require that students have to drop out or transfer major if they fail one or more subjects. Does Semmelweis University give students chance to resit the examination during the study?
A At our university, you have 4-6 opportunities to retake the exam for each subject within limited time. Due to teachers having their own schedule, this means that you have to make appointments in advance. If you have other exams at the same time, which means that you can’t resit examination at this time. In fact, the actual number of resit you may use are fewer than 6 times, but it is already more than enough. However, some subjects, such as anatomy, if you fail once, you can resit. After passing it, you could successfully study in the sophomore. If you study hard from the first year and manage your time well, then you don’t need to consider to resit any exam at all. However, if some students have special family problems, the university will give them opportunities to resit according to specific situation. Actually, our university has high requirements on students. The purpose that we admit students is to let you graduate successfully rather than to brush you off in the first or second year after the admission. Therefore, passing the entrance exam is very necessary and it is an important criterion.
