Founded in 1348, Charles University in Prague was the first university in Central Europe, east of France and north of the Alps. It is one of the oldest universities in Europe in continuous operation and ranks in the upper 1.5 percent of the world’s best universities. The university of Charles in central Europe (1348), the University of Bologna in southern Europe (1088), the University of Paris in Western Europe (1257), and the University of Oxford in the UK (1096) were regarded as the four European cultural centers. Charles University has a wide range of specialties and rich teaching power. It is a member of the Coimbra Group and the European University Alliance.
Charles university’s teaching activities are divided into full-time undergraduate education and graduate education. The highest degrees are the doctor of medicine and doctor of philosophy. Its main teaching feature is the use of multiple languages to carry out teaching, including English, German and French. Since the 1950s, some Chinese students and scholars have studied and conducted research at Charles university.
